HER long years of volunteering that got her elected as School Trustee have won for her another prestigious honor. Marlene Mogado was conferred the Toronto University of the Philippines Alumni Association 2007 “Most Outstanding Graduate” award.
An “Obie” statuette or mini-Oblation representing the award was handed to her, in the style of the Oscars, at the UPAA 30th Anniversary Gala held at the Marriott Eaton Centre Hotel on Nov. 3, 2007.
With over 25 years of community volunteer work for many causes and now Markham Trustee for the York Catholic District School Board, Mogado's extensive work on social justice, and her heavy involvement with other new immigrant communities and the greater Canadian society had tipped the scales in her favor, according to the judges.
Among many contenders, Mogado's achievements were the most to exemplify the values and expectations from UP alumni, said York University Professor Philip Kelly, Chair of the Panel of Judges.
He said UP education carries with it obligations- as “in giving back to the people and engaging in social reform or social responsibility such as social justice and progressive causes associated with UP as a radical institution.” The panel, with Dr. Mario Andres and Rose Bustamante as members, agreed it was Mogado that had sufficiently met those criteria.
In most of the high profile social justice causes involving Filipinos, Marlene Mogado was a core member or leader, among them - the Scarborough Town Center racial harassment of Filipino youth, the Michael Santos and Jeffrey Reodica killings, and most recently the Jocelyn Dulnuan murder. She organized the community to pursue racist remarks against the Chinese by then Markham Deputy Mayor Carole Bell until it caught international attention and finally got resolved. She helped with many proactive initiatives on anti-racism, cross-cultural understanding, health for women and seniors, empowerment, low-cost housing, among others. She has worked with various organizations - Filipino, other ethno cultural minorities, mainstream, civic and government.
For her efforts she has received numerous awards, among them the 2000 Binibining Pilipinas Foundation Most Outstanding Filipino Canadian Award, the 2002 Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal for Community Service, the 2004 YMCA Canada Peace Medallion, and the 2004 York Region “In Celebration of Women” Oustanding Achievement Award.
She was elected as Trustee last November.
Marlene Mogado said she was “delighted and humbled” by the award. “Consistent with UP traditions, and in the spirit of the Oblation, I will continue to serve the people back home and in Canada , so that I may be more worthy of tonight's award,” she added.
In its 30 years of existence UPAA has conferred 13 “Most Outstanding” Awards. Recipients of the “Most Outstanding UP Alumnus/Alumna” Award are former Cabinet Minister Dr. Rey Pagtakhan, Ely Reyes, Dr. Manuel Garcia, Conrado Santos, Dr. Lilian Thompson and Atilano Lacson.
The “Most Outstanding Member of UPAA-Toronto” Award was presented to Nilda and Mon Exmundo, the late Dr. Guillermo de Villa Jr., Judge Mila Eustaquio Syme, Eleanor Calbes, Dr. Vicky Santiago and Dr. Mario Andres. Ms. Mogado is the first to receive the “Most Outstanding Graduate” Award but her “Obie” is only the third to be handed out. Unveiled in 2002 the “Obie” debuted for the awardees that same year- to Drs. Santiago and Andres.
UPAA-Toronto President Noel Cruz praised the big crowd at the milestone reunion anniversary. “It shows a strong, very much alive and growing UP spirit,” he said. He cited the hard work of his crew which includes the following Executive Officers: Vice President Fanny Calucag, Secretary Teresa Lumanlan, Treasurer Reena Liboro and Public Affairs and Communications Officer Rose Tijam. The above officers are also members of the UPAA Council, which has the following additional members: Amy Ada, Gena Baldivia, past Prexy Bay Bernabe, Livvy Camacho, Gilbert Esmele, Jo Flach, Rose Marie Gerardo, Rheea Liboro, Oswald Magno, and Mary Anne Morales.
